The Lolita subculture and style community actually began in Japan. Some of the first Lolita fashions were designed by Angelic Pretty, appearing in the late 70′s. There are characteristics of this style which make Lolita fashion very recognizable. First, is its focus on modesty. The skirts and dresses are “cupcake” shaped, knee length. Other additions to this style ranged from corsets and knee-high socks to floor-length dresses. Various types of costumes came on the scene, along with Musical bands which wore Lolita fashion while performing.

There are many variations within the Lolita style community. “Gothic Lolita”, for example, includes a darker color of clothing along with a make-up style closely resembling the Goth styles found in the states. Some accessories, such as purses, are “bat” shaped. “Sweet Lolita”, on the other hand, fashions the clothing to resemble styles worn in the Victorian era. This style uses much lighter colors and appears to be more child-like and innocent. Halfway between Gothic and Sweet lies “Classic Lolita”. Classic is more mature in design, the colors muted. Jewelry and accessories are far more functional and intricate in design.
